About the book On The Verge

THE EMOTIONAL WORLD OF EVERYDAY OBJECTS

All places are manoeuvred and traversed by the trajectories of these symbolic or real pilgrimages. -Michel de Certeau, The Practice of Everyday Life

I find joy in arranging objects. These “symbolic or real pilgrimages” can take many forms, from the little things we do every day in our homes to bigger things we set out to achieve. Even ordinary objects like dishcloths, mirrors, and chairs can change and become more important to us as our thoughts and feelings change about them. This collection of my writings from the past six years shows you my vivid and imaginative visions of ordinary moments with objects. It also shows you the shared experiences of loss and loneliness that people go through during personal and global conflicts. These poems and prose are like my spiritual journeys. Through them, I collect and express a deeper, more expansive understanding of the complexities of life.

-Claire Lee, 2025

Excerpt from Foreword

A love letter to life, a periodic table for loss, a quotient and potion for solitude… There are times when the rush to turn scars into stars takes away the chance to sense how pain moves. Claire’s words defy. – Yang Yeung, writer, curator, educator
